You are the project manager for the project that you selected and identified in the prior assignment

Weekly tasks or assignments (Individual or Group Projects) will be due by Monday, and late submissions will be assigned a late penalty in accordance with the late penalty policy found in the syllabus. NOTE: All submission posting times are based on midnight Central Time.

The learner’s project plan may be large and complex. The purpose of the project plan is to meet the needs of the organization by accomplishing the task. Some organizations use the phrase, “setting the objectives,” while others may say, “defining the scope of the project.” Your Key Assignment includes using the parts of project management planning from Weeks 1–3 and applying them to the following scenario.

Project Situation

You are the project manager for the project that you selected and identified in the prior assignments. In constructing a work breakdown structure (WBS) in Phase 2 IP, you identified the deliverables, and you also identified the activities and their durations necessary to produce those deliverables. In Phase 3, you identified the skill sets necessary to do the work of the activities. Using your Microsoft Project software, enter your deliverables and the activities necessary to create those deliverables. Indent your activities under the deliverables so the deliverables appear as summary tasks. Enter the durations of the activities, and use predecessor relationships to sequence your activities.

Enter your resources that have the necessary skill sets in Microsoft Project, and then assign your resources to the activities to produce the cost estimates.

Your Microsoft Project software should include the following:

·         Deliverables

·         Tasks to complete deliverables

·         Estimated task durations based on available resources

·         Planned start dates (Use Predecessor relationships to sequence tasks)

·         Planned completion dates (Use Predecessor relationships to sequence tasks)

·         Planned milestones (Use Predecessor relationships to sequence tasks)

·         Individual(s) or department(s) assigned to complete the work of tasks to produce deliverables (use the Resource Sheet view to list resources, and then use Assign Resources tool in the Gantt chart view to assign resources to tasks)

·         Estimated project completion date based on use of Predecessor relationships to sequence tasks

Add the organizational chart that you developed.

Apply the project management concepts discussed in Weeks 1–3 to this project. This information will also be used in next week’s individual project to identify some of the most challenging parts of project management.

Scheduling is Essential to a Project

The PERT chart is one among the most useful tools in order to show that there is proper scheduling, organization, and coordination from the each task that are requires for a project. Which is and methodology that which was developed within the U.S. Navy during the middle of the twentieth century as a means of ensuring the proper management of U.S. submarine missile system known name Polaris. It was about the same period; that a another system known as CPM was created and used in the private sector for matters dealing with project management; and it has become an necessary element of the same since then. PERT chart, deals with making representation for a project through a network like diagram, and which consists of numbered nodes that are represented either as circles or rectangles (Icmeli, Erenguc & Zappe, 1993). The type of illustrations will work towards the representation of the many events or milestones which have and direct approach on the action of the tasks that are given in the project. An element of the main aspects for this type of project representation; will be that the fact of the direction for the arrows within it displays and sequence for the given tasks which that will be carried through  during the project.

A critical planning method or CPM will be part of one the scheduling tools process, and   is used for the management of projects in the private sector and it well known and is so commonly used in various construction, and aerospace industries. The CPM is generally used in the following: planning, scheduling and coordination of the execution of the use of tasks that is needed to enable and fulfillment of these requirements for a particular task of the project; normally because of the identification for individually distinct type of work activities required to accomplish the project and the relationship of those activities to one another that CPM becomes a very useful tool (Galloway, 2006). This happens due the CPM scheduling; allows for the determination of what activities are critical to completing the project; those that must be performed on their early start and finish dates to avoid any delay to the project’s completion. It helps in the recognition of those tasks which are not entirely critical to the project and this allows for there to be a delay in their implementation while at the same time working on those tasks which are most pertinent for the project, hence fewer delays.

Gantt chart is a tool which is normally placed into use during the process of making an illustration for the project schedule, also will include start and finish dates of activities and a illustration for the activities that are needed for making the project successful (Pankaja, 2005). The good thing about the Gant chart; is the activities which are presented within the Gantt chart are very useful in the formation of what is usually called the work breakdown structure of a specific project that is being undertaken by an organization. These charts can be used as excellent tools as a means of displaying the renewed schedule status using actual complete shadings and vertical line representing the actual date. It is a fact that Gantt charts are at times prepared in a manner which shows precedence in the activities and following activities and their relationships.

All of these tools are extremely important in the management of projects because they provide the means for managers to determine how long the project is going to last, what tasks are to be undertaken during certain periods, and finally, who will be involved in making the project successful.
